Classes and Workshops

The following are some of our upcoming classes and workshops …

We offer a variety of classes through the City of Gaithersburg.  You may always find more information and register at their online registration website or by calling the Arts Barn at 301.258.6394.  Here are some of the classes being offered:

Photography Foundations: Basics of Exposure

Dates: Sunday, September 8, October 6, November 3 and December 8, 2013 (4 sessions meeting once a month)
Time: 2:30 to 4:30 pm
Ages: 14 to Adult
Location: Arts Barn, Studio 102
Cost: $120 Nonresident/$104 City of Gaithersburg Resident

A four-session class designed to help beginning photographers develop a solid understanding of the basics of exposure: aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and how they work together to create sound imagery.  Each session consists of discussion, along with hands-on application, making the technical aspects of photography both easy and fun.  Assignments are given between sessions, with a final review session, putting everything together.  An equipment list is available at the Arts Barn, but you will need a camera that has manual, along with aperture and shutter priority settings, preferably a DSLR or advanced compact.

Art Mentorship

Dates: Wednesday, October 9 (4 SESSIONS), November 13 (2 SESSIONS), or December 11 (2 SESSIONS), 2013
Time: 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Ages: 12 to 15
Location: Arts Barn Studio 102
Cost: $76 Residents/$90 Nonresidents for 4 sessions, $58 Residents/$67 Nonresidents for 3 sessions; $39 Residents/$45 Nonresidents for 2 sessions

For the teen that has a love for the fine arts.  In this weekly mentorship class, students explore their creativity through personal project, having the instructor available to help guide their work.  Students should bring a selection of their artwork (their “portfolio”) to the first class for review with the instructor.

Artful Thursdays and Sundays

An opportunity for families to explore art together. Children, along with a parent or guardian, create a variety of art and craft projects using an array of mediums. Together we explore colors and shapes, while developing fine motor skills and expanding creativity. Each week explores a different theme.  No charge for parent/guardian.  Supply fee is included in the registration fee.

Exploring Art

Dates: Sunday, October 20 and October 27 (2 SESSIONS including HALLOWEEN), November 17 (THANKSGIVING), or December 15 (HOLIDAY), 2013
Time: 1:00 to 2:00 pm
Ages: 5 to 6
Location: Arts Barn Studio 102
Cost: $34 Residents/$35 Nonresidents for 2 sessions; $18 Residents/$20 Nonresidents for 1 session

Explore the basic elements of art and craft, using a variety of media, encouraging creativity and personal expression.  Stories are incorporated as themes and inspiration.  Each session explores different projects and themes.  Please wear clothes that may bet messy.  Supply fee is included in the registration fee.


Dates: Saturday, September 21, 2013 (8 sessions with no class on October 26)
Time: 3:30 to 5:00 pm
Ages: 8 to 11
Location: Arts Barn Studio 102
Cost: $156 Residents/$180 Nonresidents + $10 supply fee due at first class.

Learn to create your own special illustrated storybook.  Begin by defining characters, then develop a fictional story based on the characters, and finally illustrate the story, creating finished children’s book.  A perfect fit for young artists who love art, reading & writing.  There sill be assignments given between class sessions and students will need access to a computer and printer.


A series of foundational art education classes combining the study of art history, theory and materials with fun projects.  Focus is on personal expression, creativity and building artistic skills.  Wear old clothing.  Some projects will be outdoors.  Supply fees are included.

 Art Foundations: The Media II

Exploring the art mediums of pastels, temperas, and 3-D mixed media.

Art Foundations: Acrylic Painting Workshop

Come for an afternoon to create an acrylic painting on canvas.  Please bring photos of painting ideas.

Pop-Up Greeting Cards

Just in time for the holidays, learn the basics of how to make fun cards that pop!  A great family activity (tuition is per person) and a money saving craft..

Photography: Basics of Portraiture

Date: Saturday, October 5, 2013
Time: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Ages: 16 to Adult
Location: Black Rock Studio
Cost: $70 (including models fee)

Prerequisite: Solid understanding of exposure and manual camera settings.  Workshop will focus on how to take flattering portraits and experiment with lighting.  Please bring: digital SLR camera with manual and priority mods and a tripod.

Wine with the Masters: Chagall

Date: Thursday, November 21, 2013
Time: 7:00 to 9:30 pm
Ages: 21 and up
Location: Black Rock Wet Studio
Cost: $45 (including materials fee and wine)

Here’s a fantastic new way to combine painting with socializing. Sip wine while creating your own masterpieces inspired by the masters!  Not an artist? Not a problem.  The instructor will guide you through the one-night class.  You will go home with a painting you can call “uniquely yours” and hopefully, a new-found interest and talent you’ll want to explore further.  We provide the 11×14 canvas, materials, and wine.  Warning!  These workshops fill quickly.
